India’s AFC Asian Cup 2024 campaign will be facing the stiff ask for goals against heavyweights like Australia and once again millions of Indian football fans will turn to Sunil Chhetri for putting the ball into the net.
And a few training sessions later at the ongoing Indian training camp in Qatar, India’s newly-appointed set-piece coach Trevor Sinclair can clearly see why the 38-year-old striker has scored a record 93 international goals.
“I have played with a lot of good players like Jermaine Defoe, Les Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen, and they all had that killer instinct. Sunil Chhetri is no different,” the former Manchester City winger told RevSportz.
“He is a class act! I only know him for few days and he is a serious character, serious about winning, competing, and training at his best,” He is dependable. When you need just that one moment of magic in the final third, his finishing, Sunil Chhetri has already showcased to the world.”
It goes without saying that playing at a tournament as big as AFC Asian Cup 2024, only few chances will come towards India to score, making and Trevor Sinclair as a set-piece expert all that important if the clinical abilities of somebody like Sunil Chhetri could be put to good use. Working with the team, Sinclair could already feel that hunger to be prepared for the big stage.
“The work that I see them (Indian players) putting into not only their physical condition, but also their technical execution on the training pitch, they are going through the drills like they know that they need to be spot on with their passing, execution of crossing, and finishing.
“Against top teams, you do not get many chances and you’ve got to be clinical. Igor has already mentioned that. But certainly, the way they have been preparing themselves physically, this is as good as I have seen,” said Sinclair
