Healthy Foods You Didn’t Know Could Spike Your Blood Sugar Levels

Healthy Foods That May Increase Blood Sugar Levels

Diabetes is one of the most debilitating conditions affecting millions every year. For someone suffering from type-2 diabetes, it is vital to be careful of the foods they eat. While people with diabetes are well aware of the importance of carbohydrate counting in maintaining blood sugar levels, how a certain food affects your blood sugar levels is determined by more than just the number of carbs in it. Sometimes even the healthiest foods can increase your blood sugar levels.

Grapes

Do you love a refreshing bowl full of juicy grapes? You might want to reconsider it if you have diabetes. As it turns out, grapes can cause a spike in your blood sugar levels. In fact, many fruits can be a problem for people with diabetes. As healthy as fruits are, they can be a problem for people with diabetes if consumed in excess. However, how much you eat and the way you eat it also plays a role. So, opt for whole fresh options and have limited portions.

Oatmeal

A staple breakfast for many – oatmeal is not your best friend if you have diabetes! Studies suggest that people who eat instant oatmeal with added sugar or too much oatmeal at once are at an increased risk of high blood sugar levels.

Milk

According to Harvard Medical School, even dairy milk is a carb, but with a low GI. That isn’t always the case with non-dairy milk, with the currently popular oat milk having a high sugar content, with rice milk having the greatest sugar content. So be careful when you choose the kind of milk you want to drink.

Yoghurt

While plain yoghurt is not a bad option for diabetics, fruit-flavoured yoghurt – the one loaded with carbs and sugar – can lead to higher blood sugar and insulin levels.
