Guwahati Youth Stuck In Ukraine Pleads For Help From Assam Government

GUWAHATI: A Guwahati youth pursuing a medical degree in Ukraine has reached out to G Plus for help from the Assam government in safely evacuating from the country.

On Thursday morning, his efforts to fly out from the Ukrainian capital failed amid escalating violence post what the West is describing as a Russian invasion of its former province.

Tarun Tyagi, a Guwahati resident pursuing a medical degree in Ukraine, was supposed to board an Air India flight out of the capital Kyiv on Thursday morning. However, the flight was cancelled after the Ukrainian government closed down its airspace to civilian flights following aggressive manoeuvres by Russian military forces in the country’s East.

Tyagi along with his friend and compatriot from Haryana, Parneet Nadha, took to Twitter to appeal for help from authorities back home. “We’re struck (sic) at Kyiv airport. Please help us to reach India. There’s so much panic situation,” Nadha wrote. He tagged Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, actor Sonu Sood and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in his tweet.

For his part, Tyagi urged G Plus to report on his situation and help secure assistance from the Assam government for a safe evacuation from Ukraine.

Around one hundred students from Assam are currently stuck in Ukraine at the moment, according to a statement by CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday.

Tyagi was travelling back to his hostel from the airport in a bus at the time of filing this report. Further updates from him are awaited.
