Gujarat Narmada Fertilizers Company gets MoEF nod for Rs 4400 cr expansion project

Ahmedabad, The Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilizers Company Ltd (GNFC) will be implementing a Rs 4,463 crore expansion project in Bharuch district of Gujarat, where it will increase the existing production capacity almost three times for Urea, Ammonia and Aniline at the Narmadanagar plant.
The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests and Climate Change accorded environmental clearance to the brownfield project where company plans to hike the existing production capacity of Urea from 7.2 lakh MTPA (million ton per annum) to 21.25 lakh MTPA, Ammonia production from 6.3 lakh MTPA to 16.52 lakh MTPA and Aniline production from 48,000 MTPA to 1.26 lakh MTPA.
As part of this expansion project, the company has also planned to set up a Water Soluble fertilizers (NPK) plant having a capacity of 5000 MTPA, and another plant for TDI-MDI blends of 7800 MTPA capacity. The water soluble fertilizer plant is being set up with an eye on the fast expanding drip irrigation network in Gujarat and other states.
These expansions will be done in the existing unit of the company which is a joint sector enterprise promoted by Government of Gujarat and Gujarat State Fertilizer Company Ltd. GNFC officials confirmed the development to The Indian Express.
After the expansion, GNFC’s fresh water requirement from Narmada river, Ukai canal and Narmada canal will be increased to 83,600 cubic meter per day from the earlier 55,000 cubic meter. Meanwhile, the industrial effluent generation in GNFC Unit-1 will increase to 25,200 cubic meter per day after expansion (from the current 19,700 cubic meter), while that from GNFC Unit-2 will increase to 2,600 cubic meter per day from the earlier 1400 cubic meter.
The industrial effluent from the company will be treated in the effluent treatment plant (ETP) and treated effluent will be discharged to river Bhukhi after obtaining permission from the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB).
