Genome sequencing find 19 out of 20 dengue samples with ‘severe strain’ in Delhi: Report

New Delhi: Conjunctivitis is not only the monsoon infection that has grappled Delhi but dengue cases are equally on the rise. In a recent development, 19 out of 20 dengue samples sent for genome sequencing have resulted positive for DENV-2, one the dangerous strain which is known to cause major damage, informed the Delhi government on Friday.

In order to assess the progress being made in containing the spread of vector-borne illnesses, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal convened a high-level review meeting with participation from the Mayor of Delhi, Shelly Oberoi, the Health Minister, and other municipal and health authorities.

The government further noted that a 24-hour dengue control room will soon be implemented for support. While as per a report of TOI, doctors have been asked to not prescribe, blood thinners like aspirin and disprin for use during the treatment of dengue, as they can be harmful.

Additional instructions have been given to various government departments and organisations to prevent mosquito breeding in and around their workplaces. There are four dengue virus serotypes: DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4, according to medical professionals. One of these, DENV-2, is a particularly dangerous strain with the ability to result in dengue hemorrhagic fever.

What is dengue type 2?

According to Virology Journal, dengue virus serotype 1 (DENV-1) has dominated the dengue epidemic in China for the past two decades, but DENV-2 has also been identified and linked to outbreaks in a number of localities. According to reports, DENV-2 is more easily spread than the other three serotypes and has a higher propensity to cause DHF/DSS.

The virus that causes dengue is known as the dengue virus (DENV), and the sickness is spread by mosquitoes. The virus is spread by female mosquitoes, mostly of the species Aedesaegypti and, to a lesser degree, Ae. Albopictus. Zika, yellow fever, and chikungunya viruses are also spread by these insects. Dengue virus serotypes DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4 exist, making it possible to contract the disease four times.

Dengue D2 symptoms
High temperatures of 104 F (40 C), is caused by dengue fever and other signs and symptoms are:

  • Headache.
  • Muscle, bone or joint pain.
  • Nausea.
  • Vomiting.
  • Pain behind the eyes.
  • Swollen glands.
  • Rash.
