Gambhir says he’s friends with Kohli

New Delhi, Most cricket fans feel Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir don’t get along well. It’s of course just a perception, but not without any basis. The fans haven’t forgotten the ugly on-field spat between the two during an IPL match in 2013— the two had come extremely close to trading some punches when their teammates intervened and avoided an ugly showdown. And then this year, again during their IPL match, Gambhir kicked a chair when Kolkata Knight Riders eked out a thrilling win over Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore. It was easy to see that Gambhir’s celebration wasn’t purely professional, there seemed something personal in it.
When quizzed about the relationship he shares with Kohli, Gambhir said they were friendly on and off the field. As to why they don’t appear so, the left-hander said both of them were aggressive and passionate individuals who always want to give their best for their teams. “When you are playing against an opposition, you want to go out there and win the game. For that you have to be aggressive; as a leader you want your team to play the game as you do,” said Gambhir.
The left-hander, who doesn’t shy away from speaking his mind, said it’s alright for them to have a difference of opinion as long as they are trying to win the game for their team. “Even if we have a difference of opinion, there is nothing wrong in it. We both have the same ambition — it’s to make our country proud, try to win each and every game and contribute to the team’s success. There is nothing personal about it. This is what professionals do. We are pretty good friends on and off the field,” he told a news channel.
