Former minister-cum-veteran Congress leader Gurnam Singh Abul Khurana, aged about 90, passed away on Tuesday at his Chandigarh residence. He was suffering from age-related and kidney ailment from past some time.
The state government declared a holiday in its offices, Boards, corporations and educational institutions for the remaining part of the day as a mark of respect to the departed leader.
Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh too expressed grief over the sad demise of Gurnam Singh. In his condolence message, the CM described Gurnam Singh as a gentleman politician and leader of masses with the qualities of head and heart, who worked tirelessly for the welfare of downtrodden and overall development of Malwa region.
SAD chief-cum-MP Ferozepur Sukhbir Singh Badal too condoled the demise of Gurnam Singh.
Gurnam Singh Abul Khurana remained MLA from Lambi Assembly Constituency in Muktsar district from 1992 to 1997. He served as Irrigation and Revenue Minister.
He is survived by three sons Hardeep Singh Abul Khurana, Harjit Singh Abul Khurana, PPCC general secretary Jagpal Singh Abul Khurana and a daughter.
The cremation would be held on Wednesday at Abul Khurana village here.
