Farmer’s suicide: Sonia leads Cong demand for judicial probe

Sonia Gandhi at an Election RallyNew Delhi, Congress president Sonia Gandhi today led from the front the party’s demand for a full fledged judicial investigation into the suicide committed by Rajasthan farmer Gajendra Singh in full public view and with TV cameras rolling.
“We are not satisfied with the response of Prime Minister and Home Minister on the issue and we will press for a judicial probe into this very tragic and unfortunate suicide,” Sonia Gandhi said today when asked in the Parliament galleries as to what her response was to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s assurances regarding a proper investigation by way of Delhi Police Commissioner.
The Congress president indicated that her party would not let the demand of judicial probe die because the suicide “was criminal negligence on part of Delhi state, and Delhi police and a total moral failure on the part of the Central government”.
Moments after Sonia Gandhi gave the party a line on judicial investigation into the farmer’s suicide, Congress workers staged a dharna at Jantar Mantar to express solidarity with the family of the victim and also later took out a candle light march on the issue.
Yesterday the Congress had openly attacked Prime Minister and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for abetting the suicide of the farmer at AAP’s rally yesterday and demanded an FIR against both.
Although the Congress later climbed down on its demand to criminally charge PM Modi for the suicide, it has since stuck to its call for a criminal case against Kejriwal and the Delhi police which did nothing in the name of preventive policing yesterday and allowed a suicide to occur in front of their eyes.
Congress spokesman RPN Singh later in the day said the party would not settle for anything less than a judicial probe into the suicide.
