Amritsar, Members of TADA convict Gurdeep Singh Khera’s family met him at Amritsar Central Jail today. They were denied a meeting with him yesterday.
Talking to the media after meeting Khera, his family members urged the government to release him as he had completed his jail term. “He has been in the jail for 24 years and should be released now,” they said.
Khera’s parents Banta Singh and Jagir Kaur thanked the state government for getting him shifted to Punjab. “We can now share our happiness and sorrows with him,” said Banta Singh.
Khera’s nephew Husnpreet Singh said he was healthy and enquired about the wellbeing of all close relatives. He said the family members had earlier met him around eight years ago when he was granted parole for attending the marriage of his sister. Khera’s sisters Paramjit Kaur and Baljit Kaur also met him.
Panel to move parole plea
The sangarsh committee spearheading the movement for the release of Sikh detainees is all set to move a plea seeking parole for Khera on Monday. He was shifted from Karnataka to Amritsar Central Jail on Thursday night.
Committee members Harpal Singh Cheema and RP Singh met Khera in the jail today. Cheema, who is also the Chairman of the Sikhs for Human Rights, said they would move a plea for Khera’s parole on Monday. He said they would also kick off the process for seeking bail for him. Though the premature release of Khera was not possible in view of a case pending in the Supreme Court, he might be granted bail, he said.
Cheema said he also met 1993 Delhi blast convict Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar in the jail. Bhullar told him people were not being allowed to meet him, he said. “He felt he was missing the environment that he had expected in his home town,” Cheema added.
Radical Sikh outfit Dal Khalsa leader Kanwar Pal Singh said they would initiate the process for Khera’s bail on July 1.
