Elections to 123 municipal councils and nagar councils in Punjab to be held on Feb 25.

Chandigarh, Shri Shivinder Singh Brar, State Election Commissioner Punjab stated that elections to the 123 Municipal Councils/ Nagar Panchayats and one ward in Nagar Panchayat of Bariwala in district Sri Muktsar Sahib will be held on25.02.2015 and the counting of votes shall be taken up immediately thereafter at the polling booth itself.

The Commission Notification with regard to the elections to the Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats and one Nagar Panchayat where a bye election will be issued on 10.02.2015 and the Code of Conduct shall come into force immediately from 10.02.2015. The Code of Conduct will operate from 10.02.2015 in all area that fall within the jurisdiction of these 123 Municipal Councils/ Nagar Panchayats and the Nagar Panchayat where a bye poll is to be held and will end on 27th February, 2015.

The nominations will be received from 11.00 AM to 3.00 PM from the 10th of February, 2015, last date for filing nominations shall be 13.02.2015, date of scrutiny shall be 14.02.2015 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is 16.02.2015, the poll, if necessary, shall be conducted on 25.02.2015 and the counting of votes will be taken up soon thereafter at the polling booth itself.

Shri Brar stated that the 123 Municipal Councils/ Nagar Panchayats and one ward in Nagar Panchayat of Bariwala district Sri Muktsar Sahib comprising a total electorate of 28,50,000 approximately. This total electorate will vote in 2062 wards, in approximately over 3500.

The State Election Commissioner stated that all required election materials have been dispatched to the districts. The EVMs are currently under inspection for being declared election worthy. The DGP, Punjab has been requested to ensure proper and adequate security for the electoral process. The State Election Commission have set up registers to record every complaint received which when received will be properly diarised and maintained in Commission record, a photocopy of which would be sent to the quarter concerned for report. All complaints would be fully followed up. Shri Brar stated that the Commission wishes to inform all contestants that the elections shall be free, fair and very impartial.

Shri Brar stated that it was a matter of satisfaction for the Commission that for the general elections to Panchayats, Panchayat Samitis and Zila Parishads held in the months of May and July, 2013 not even a single writ petition had been moved to the Punjab & Haryana High Court as opposed to several thousands which had been filed against elections conducted in the previous years. The Commission is hopeful that the same situation shall prevail in these elections as well.
