Doctors successfully transplant hands donated by a brain dead person into 27-year-old patient

Kolkata: The State Government Hospital SSKM has done the unthinkable. The body of a 27-year-old was given two hands that had been donated by a brain-dead individual.

In the state of East India, this is the first instance of a cadaveric transplant and the fifteenth in the country.

The surgery began on Saturday at 5 am in the morning and ended early on Sunday morning at three, reported Tv9 Bangla. Accoridng to the report, the procedure went on nonstop for 22 hours. For this procedure, the one and only Government Super Speciality Hospital assembled a medical staff and team of 32 physicians.

During the procedure, the young man was kept on ventilation for 27 hours. After that, he was moved from ventilation to CCU on Monday at 9 a.m. His health has stabilised at this point. He is now receiving care from the plastic surgery division, the report noted. Although liver, kidney, heart, and lung transplants are common these days, this is the first instance of an external organ donation.

The director of SSKM and IPGMER, Manimoy Bandopadhyay, stated that this type of hand transplant is unique. Only the knowledge of public hospitals made this effort possible. At 3 pm, the primary surgery was finished. They all are on high alert, he added.

Who donated organs?

A 43-year-old man was hurt in a car collision on July 9 in Howrah’s Uluberia. The patient’s condition began to deteriorate on July 13th. Finally, there was brain death. After that, the hospital was contacted for information on his blood type and cell-related issues. The 27-year-old native of Birati (N 24 Parganas) had been receiving care at SSKM’s plastic surgery division for the previous 12 months at the time. He needs two hands.

According to the nephrology department doctor, a transplant has been performed. The question is how long the body will put up with these hands, though. Typically, the body resists outside influences. Therefore, extremely toxic medications are being used. Major dysfunction will occur if blood circulation is not initiated. Other parts of the body are present at the same moment. He is closely watched at all times. For a whole year, this observation should be made.

What is a cadaveric donation?

Accoridng to British medical journal’s report, organ donation, which entails removing the heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, and pancreas from brain-dead individuals, as well as tissue donation, which entails removing the skin, corneas, tendons, bones, and other body tissues from both brain dead and heart dead individuals, are both included in the cadaveric donation. The pathologist is unable to do organ transplants on brain-dead patients since this operation is carried out in the operating room by surgeons
