DHURI BYPOLL : Congress set to field Barnala, SAD Longowal

Dhuri (Sangrur), The Congress has reportedly cleared the name of Simar Pratap Singh Barnala (26), a son of former Dhuri MLA Gaganjeet Singh Barnala and grandson of former Chief Minister Surjit Singh Barnala, for the Dhuri Assembly byelection. An official announcement in this regard is yet to be made.
A senior leader of the Punjab Congress confirmed that most probably Simar Partap Singh Barnala’s name would be announced by the Congress high command late tonight.
The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has cleared the name of former Punjab minister Gobind Singh Longowal for the contest. Longowal contested the Dhuri Assembly election in 2012, but he lost to Arvind Khanna of the Congress by 12,473 votes.
SAD secretary general Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa confirmed this evening that Longowal’s name had been cleared by the party. An official announcement in that regard would be made by the party high command soon, he said.
CPI’s Dr Joginder Dayal said the CPI, CPM, CPM Punjab (Pasla) and the CPI ML (Liberation) would not support Barnala.
