DGP points to laxity on border

Chandigarh, The blame game between the Punjab Police and the BSF over drug smuggling re-surfaced today with state Director-General of Police (DGP) Sumedh Saini claiming that the police had seized three major consignments of drugs in the past 33 days. He did not directly name the BSF.
He claimed that after snapping the distribution network of smugglers, the police was focusing on plugging the supply lines from across the international border.
The state government too has been blaming the BSF for laxity on the border. It maintains that Punjab falls in the transit route of peddlers and that the drugs are meant for metro cities or tourist places such as Goa.
Saini said close on the heels of 25 kg heroin seizure on February 18 in the Fazilka sector and 8 kg heroin on January 24 in the Ferozepur sector, the police had yesterday seized 50 kg heroin, perhaps the largest-ever in the country. The 25 kg heroin consignment was sent by Lahore-based druglord Imtiaz, the 8 kg heroin consignment by Lahore-based Hazi and the 50 kg consignmentby Shehbaj alias Kala.
