The first roadshow of BJP candidate Sunny Deol, which turned out to be a marathon one stretching from Dera Baba Nanak till Pathankot via Gurdaspur and Dinanagar, met with resounding success as thousands of people braved the searing sun and lined the streets to have a glimpse of the actor.
The development appears to have revitalised an almost dead BJP cadre in the constituency and has pulled the rug from under the feet of Congress leaders who were anticipating a lukewarm response, particularly after the unimpressive showing Deol and his BJP handlers had put up on April 29 when he filed his nomination.
The actor, after paying obeisance at Darbar Sahib Gurdwara in Dera Baba Nanak, proceeded to have a glimpse of Kartarpur Sahib. Deol said “he was very poor in delivering political speeches” and admitted that he had even confided in PM Modi that he was not a “good orator.” “He told me not to worry and asked me just to be my normal self and start the campaign.”
Sitting Congress MP Sunil Jakhar said: “When he himself has admitted he is not a politician and knows nothing about Punjab or Punjabi, then what is he doing here? Gurdaspur shouldn’t be a training school for politicians.”
