COVID-19 pushed things back by a couple of weeks: KL Rahul issues clarification after latest injury setback

Star Indian opener KL Rahul suffered another injury setback as he was part of the squad for the upcoming three-match series against Zimbabwe.

Rahul was expected to make a comeback in Zimbabwe and lead the team before traveling to the Asia Cup.

However, Rahul’s name was missing from the action with multiple media reports suggesting that his absence is injury related. The talismanic Indian batter recently underwent a surgery for sports hernia in Germany and was spotted recovering at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.

After speculations on his injuries, Rahul issued a clarification and explained that his recent COVID-19 diagnosis pushes his recovery back. The Indian vice-captain expressed his desire to return to the field and called playing for the country as the ‘highest honour.’

“Hey guys. I wanted to clarify a couple of things about my health and fitness. My surgery in June was successful, and I had begun training with the hope of returning to national duty for the teams tour of the West Indies. Unfortunately, as I was nearing a return to full fitness, I tested positive for COVID – 19,” said Rahul.

“This naturally pushes things back by a couple of weeks, but I aim to recover as quickly as possible, and be available for selection as soon as I can. To represent the national team is the highest honour, and I cannot wait to get out there back in blue. See you soon KLR,” he added.

Since the 2021 T20 World Cup, Rahul has played only two T20Is for India. After missing the 3rd T20I vs New Zealand, he was not part of the Indian team for the home series against South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies, and South Africa. He did not travel to either Ireland and England. He also missed the Test series against New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and England.

Rahul was picked in the Indian team for the ongoing series against West Indies but could not travel with the team after testing positive for COVID-19 last week. The 30-year-old has not played any competitive cricket since the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL).
