Patiala reported a spike in coronavirus cases on Wednesday—18 people testes positive in suburban Rajpura, taking the district tally to 49.
Rajpura alone accounts for 30 of the 49 cases, emerging as a hotspot.
Health department authorities said a major reason this is a hookah party that two businessmen organised in defiance of curfew orders—in fact, all 18 people who tested positive on Wednesday were linked to the party.
Patiala Civil Surgeon Harish Malhotra said: “Out of the 70 samples taken from the Rajpura, 18 people tested positive for the coronavirus. We will move the 18 positive cases to the isolation ward of the district at Government Rajindra Hospital”.
