Conversion row: If force is being used, state government should take action, says Venkaiah Naidu

New Delhi, Putting the onus on Opposition for stalling the Rajya Sabha on conversion issue, Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday said that such tactics are not in the interest of people.

While appealing the Opposition parties to allow the Rajya Sabha to function, Naidu said, “Opposition can debate, discuss, decide and oppose, but obstructing the normal functioning of Parliament will not favour the interest of people.”

Talking to reporters on conversion issue, Naidu said that if people are converting voluntarily then there should be no issue in it. However, if force is being used then state government should take action.

“If state government is unable to take an appropriate action then there should be a Central law. Government has offered a law that covers the entire nation, but Opposition has not responded positively,” he further added.

The opposition had stalled proceedings in the Rajya Sabha over a repeated demand that Prime Minister Narendra Modi be called to the Upper House to make a statement on the conversion row. While around 200 people were reportedly converted to Hinduism last week in a ceremony in Agra by groups linked to the BJP’s ideological mentor RSS, another 200 were converted in Gujarat by VHP yesterday.
