Toronto, Lisa Raitt, a former Harper government cabinet minister and Conservative MP for Milton, says she is “seriously considering” running for leadership of the party.
“I’m seriously considering it. I’m excited about Canada’s future and I definitely want to be part of the discussion about what a Conservative leader looks like,” Raitt said on CP24 Friday afternoon.
But the former labour, transport and natural resources minister said “there’s no need to rush” into setting up a leadership race.
“It’d be good to have a conversation for Canadians to see that there are problems in Canada and here’s what a Conservative solution might look like.”
The Conservative Party is expected to release the rules for the upcoming leadership contest, including a timeline, fees and a spending cap, sometime in the next several weeks.
So far, Simcoe-Grey MP Kellie Leitch and Quebec MP Maxime Bernier have publicly said they will run.
Raitt is one of five GTA-area Conservative MPs who held their seats in the 2015 election that saw Justin Trudeau win a Liberal majority government.
