CHANDIGARH, October 20: Senior Congress leaders and legislators today challenged the Akali leadership including the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his Deputy Chief Minister son Sukhbir Badal to go and meet the victims of police firing and the family members of those killed instead of levelling baseless allegations against Capt Amarinder Singh. “You better accept the unannounced social boycott gracefully than resort to spreading lies”, they advised Akalis.
“That you will run for the cover was certain, but that will happen so soon and so fast was not expected”, the Congress legislators including Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Rana Gurjeet Singh and Tirpt Rajinder Singh Bajwa told the Akalis in a statement issued here today.
Reacting to Akali Dal charge against Capt Amarinder that he was fanning communalism, the party leaders regretted that instead of appreciating the efforts of the former Chief Minister to assuage the hurt feelings of people, they were just issuing baseless statements from their underground hideouts as people were running after their life.
“We understand your suffocating frustration that you cannot even talk to anyone leave aside meeting somebody that too the protestors protesting against the sacrilege of holy Guru Granth Sahib and it is natural for you to issue statements from behind the safety of your hidden hideouts and spread lies”, the Congress leaders said, while advising the Akali leaders to accept the public verdict and the unannounced social boycott with grace and dignity.
Randhawa, Rana and Bajwa said, Capt Amarinder needed no certificate from anyone, much less the ‘fake Akalis’, like Mr Badal and his ilk, to establish his credentials as the mass and popular leader who was loved and respected by every Punjabi irrespective of his caste or creed as he had never played sectarian politics.
“We have challenged you earlier also and we challenge you again let you have a popularity referendum between Parkash Singh Badal and Capt Amarinder Singh and people decide”, they dared the Akali leadership, adding, if they (the Akalis) think that they can retrieve their shattered position by criticising Capt Amarinder they were badly mistaken.
