Chandigarh, March 9: Congress MP Ravneet Singh Bittu, while demanding justice to Punjab on the issue of apportionment of river waters during zero hour in the Lok Sabha today, expressed the apprehension that the state could revert to earlier days when it was rocked by militancy with 35,000 people getting killed.

He referred to the stand taken by the Narendra Modi government in the Supreme Court which, he asserted, was not in the interest of Punjab.

He advanced the logic that at the time allocation was made to Haryana from Punjab rivers, the state had water to spare but the situation now was entirely different as water table had gone down drastically and the crisis in the agrarian sector was deepening as reflected in the increasing incidence of suicides by the farmers. He said Punjab was at second place in the matter of farmers suicides in the country. He reminded the House that Punjab was contributing the maximum to the food security of the country.

He urged the centre against taking any step that might vitiate the atmosphere in Punjab.

Akali Dal MP Prem Singh Chandumajra too supported Punjab case and said this discrimination with Punjab must end. He too was critical of the stand taken by the Modi government.
