Chandigarh, August 26: The clean sweep and record victory margins of the Students Organisation of India and its partners in the Panjab University Students Council elections today has come as a big boost to Deputy Chief Minister and Akali Dal President Sukhbir Singh Badal and Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia.
What is significant is that SOI’s Jasmeen Kang has recorded her victory as the president with the biggest ever margin by getting 3731 votes as against her nearest rival Baljinder Singh who polled 2295 votes. The previous record was of 1001 votes.
Preeti Negi has been elected as vice-president polling 3777 votes as against 2089 by the nearest rival Anjali.
Rishi Bhardwaj too has won with a big margin with 3256 votes in his kitty as against 2311 in favour of Yash Sura.
Swati Tiwana is the joint secretary getting 3077 votes as against 2084 of Harmanpreet Mahey.
Sukhbir’s brigade recording its victory in Panjab University and that too with big margins is a phenomenon in itself as the drug menace had emerged as a big issue and the main tool with the adversaries against the SOI.
At one level, this is an indication that the priorities of the youth are changing and issues like drugs are no more relevant.
The Panjab University poll is an indicator of the mood in Punjab despite the fact that Chandigarh is not part of the state. However, it is Punjabi students who dominate the campus.
