Chennai: 21-year-old youth bludgeoned to death by 4 de-addiction centre inmates over rule violation complaint

Chennai: A 21-year-old youth was allegedly brutally killed by four fellow inmates at a de-addiction centre in Tamil Nadu’s Chennai, reportedly after he complained to the authorities that they were not adhering to the rules of the facility.

The deceased was identified as M Vamsi, a native of Andhra Pradesh’s Chittoor district. He was undergoing treatment at Pioneer De-Addiction Centre in Vijaya Nagar locality near Kavangarai in Chennai’s Red Hills area. He had informed the centre’s staff that four inmates – D Benin (22), who hails from Tiruvallur district, I Yasin Sherif (36), a Red Hills resident, and two juveniles (identities not revealed) – constantly flouted rules, such as breaking queues for bathing and having food, dominating other inmates and staying up till late at night for chatting. This led to strict punishment to the inmates, according to a report by The Times of India.

On Friday night, the accused covered Vamsi’s face using a bedsheet and dragged him to a washroom on the second floor of the centre. The act was caught on a CCTV camera. They then violently attacked him using buckets and handheld fire extinguishers, leading to injuries that resulted in his death. Thereafter, the accused walked out of the washroom and screamed that they murdered Vamsi.

At the time of the incident, two members of the staff were present on the second floor while others were engaged in different tasks, including food preparation. The accused asked the staff to inform the police and dumped Vamsi near the main door. This was also caught on the CCTV cameras mounted there, the TOI report stated.

The accused later locked the first floor’s door to prevent the staff members from entering. The staff members made attempts to break open the door with the help of a crowbar and hammers. The accused, however, set clothes afire and hurled them at the staff members.

The police, after being alerted, came rushing to the spot and took the accused into custody. The victim’s body was sent to a hospital for post-mortem examination. Benin and Sherif were sent to jail while the minor accused, both aged 17 years, were sent to the correctional home located at Kellys.
