Chandigarh, May 31: The issue of taking action against technical Education Minister Charanjit Singh Channi rocked the cabinet meeting today with ministers pressing Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh to take action against him while keeping the party high command in loop.
Channi abstained from the meeting.
The issue of Channi having objected to the appointments in the office of advocate general was raised by Cooperation and Jails minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa who questioned its timing.
It may be mentioned that Channi had questioned these appointments on the logic that the Dalits had been ignored by the Amarinder government. Earlier, he had also extended this argument at the time of the cabinet expansion.
Randhawa said Channi going public coincided with the Shahkot Assembly byelection and this could not be condoned.
Virtually the entire cabinet supported Randhawa on this action and pressed Amarinder to take action against him.
It may be mentioned that Congress MLA Parminder Singh Pinki had written a letter to Rahul Gandhi recently seeking Channi’s sack on the plea that he had tried to sabotage Shahkot byelection by raising the Dalit issue at this time.
