Chandigarh: 05: S Charanjit Singh Channi, Leader of opposition in Punjab vidhan sabha today condemned the brutal lathi charge by the Chandigarh police on peaceful demonstration by the kisan khet majdoor cell of Punjab Pradesh congress. Channi in a statement said that he was also a part of the protestors but suddenly the Chandigarh police started lathi charge and used water cannons on peaceful sitting farmers, who had gathered here to gherao the chief minister residence today. Many farmers were injured and few were also taken to sector 16 government hospital. The police in no ways are seen manhandling the protestors like this. The protestors were abused by the force and made to run to save their lives also.
Channi also condemned the inhuman attitude of the Chandigarh police towards the journalists who were covering the protest. S kuldeep Singh Jaffalpur and Jai Singh Chibber from Spokesman News paper were manhandled by the police officer of the rank of SHO. This is uncalled for and is a mockery of democracy. Channi also said that this has happened for the first time that the chandigarh police running after the protestors barged into the Punjab congress bhawan alongwith hundreds of policemen and started searching every room of this party office. The police officials also misbehaved with the office staff, a formal complaint has been lodged against the Chandigarh police officer while the CCTV footage of the police barging in also released to the media.
