Chandigarh, November 1: The Punjab government today transferred investigation of three cases of sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib to the Central Bureau of Investigation. This includes the cases against two brothers Rupinder Singh and Jaswinder Singh for whose release the Sikh religious leaders are agitating. They would not now be released.

Disclosing this here today, the Chief Minister’s Advisor on National Affairs and Media , Harcharan Bains told newspersons here late this evening that Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal took the decision to have these cases investigated by the highest investigative agency saying, “The Chief Minister is deeply hurt over these incidents and wants justice to be both done and to be seen to have been done in these cases.”

The Chief Minister also took note of the demands made by several religious organizations as well as members of the family of the accused already facing charges of involvement and decided to fully respect the sentiments of everyone in this regard, said the advisor.

The issue involves three cases in Police Station Baja Khana, in Faridkot district involving theft and sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib and putting up of objectionable posters . Three different FIRs had been registered in these cases. The Punjab government is fully alive to the deep emotional hurt caused by these incidents of sacrilege against the holy scripture and has consistently shown full respect the sentiments and opinion of the Sikh masses in this regard, said Bains, adding , “The Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal have accorded the highest priority to this case and are extremely concerned about the close chronological proximity of these cases. The government has maintained absolute transparency in the matter and has shared every detail of the investigation both with the Sikh masses and the media. Both the Chief Minister and his Deputy, who holds he Home Portfolio in the state government, are also keen that the ends of justice in this case must be met most promptly and expeditiously in a manner which is not only impartial and transparent but is also demonstrably clear to be so to the people, especially the Sikh masses”.

He said now it was for the CBI to go into the issue of release of the two brothers.
