Chandigarh, Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha Capt Amarinder Singh today warned the Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and the Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia against interfering into the Panjab University students’ body elections. “Don’t spoil the university atmosphere and let the students contest and vote independently”, he asked them in a statement issued here today.
Capt Amarinder disclosed that he was told Sukhbir and Majithia had started resorting to their favourite dirty old tricks by using police officials, MLAs and other politicians to intimidate the voters who they thought could oppose them. “Since in this case it is the students only, they (Sukhbir and Majithia) are not even letting them contest freely”, he said, while disclosing that the police officials and Akali MLAs were trying to build up pressure on the parents of the NSUI supporters.
The former Chief Minister said that last year the NSUI had swept the PU polls and since then Sukhbir and Majithia were eyeing these election to get a foothold in the university student politics. They are using the SOI workers, most of whom are not students even, to pressurise and intimidate the NSUI supporters. “I have already the details of every official and MLA who is trying to intimidate the students and I will deal with all of them at the right time”, he warned.
Capt Amarinder, who is in London giving finishing touches to his book on India’s contribution to World War I, specially called up Bindu Grewal, NSUI chairman of the campaign committee for these elections assuring him to contest the elections without any fear. “You don’t need to fear anyone as long as I am there because I won’t let anybody to arm-twist or intimidate you”, he assured the NSUI workers and supporters.
