Capt Amarinder welcomes BJP’s demand for transfer of Chandigarh to Punjab

Chandigarh,Congress Deputy Leader in the e Lok Sabha Capt Amarinder Singh today welcomed the Punjab BJP’s demand seeking transfer of Chandigarh to Punjab.

In a statement issued here today, Capt Amarinder said, “Chandigarh is very much a Punjab city and must be returned to Punjab”. He remarked, “good that the BJP has also endorsed the Rajiv-Longowal Accord and I hope it will be able to prevail upon its alliance partner, the Akalis also”.

The former Punjab Chief Minister observed, this was the right time to return Chandigarh to Punjab since there was a BJP government at the centre, in Haryana and Punjab as well as the party was ruling the state in alliance with the Akalis.

The Congress leader hoped that the Punjab BJP is able to take its demand to the logical conclusion and does not end up sounding mere rhetorical to find some political space in Punjab and score some political points over its alliance partner.

“The real test for the BJP’s sincerity towards the demand will begin now as people will like to see how seriously and how sincerely it pursues its demand with the centre”, Capt Amarinder observed, while cautioning the party to beware of its alliance partners, the Akalis who can sabotage any move that they view as an intrusion into their political space.

“Because the Akalis’ survival depends on keeping alive such issues for their own survival and the moment these are resolved the Akalis will run out of their breath as their survival will be at stake”, he said, while pointing out that it has always suited the Akalis not to allow the contentious issues to be resolved.
