New Delhi, The Indian Davis Cup team suffered a major jolt on Saturday after doubles specialist Rohan Bopanna pulled out of the high-profile World Group playoff tie against Spain due to a knee injury.
Bopanna has become the latest to join Somdev Devvarman and Yuki Bhambri in the list of injured players. Young Sumit Nagal has been included in the squad and could be making his Davis Cup debut.
“Bopanna has informed the chairman of the selection committee that due to a knee injury, which he suffered during the US Open, he has been advised rest of two weeks.
Hence, he has requested for withdrawal from the Davis Cup tie against Spain, which is going to be held in Delhi on September 16-18. His request was accepted by the committee. It was also decided by the committee to include Sumit Nagal in the four playing-member team,” a release from the All India Tennis Association (AITA) stated.
Anand Amritraj, the non-playing captain, could look at the possibility of teaming up Saketh Myneni with Leander Paes. Spain’s Davis Cup squad will be headlined by 14-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal and it will be a Herculean task for the Indian team to put up a brave fight against the five-time champions now that Bopanna, world No. 17, has also been ruled out.
