BJP Mayors in Hoshiarpur

Hoshiarpur, Shiv Sud of the BJP was today elected the first Mayor of the local municipal corporation.
A close aide of Tikshan Sud, BJP district chief and adviser to the Chief Minister, Shiv Sud defeated Parveen Saini of the Congress by 13 votes. The meeting to elect the top representatives of the civic body was convened by Jalandhar Divisional Commissioner R Venkata Ratnam. The election process started after the councillors were administered oath of office. Malkit Singh of the BJP was chosen to preside over the meeting while SAD’s Vikramjit Singh Kalsi proposed Shiv Sud’s name for the Mayor’s post. Avtar Singh Johal, SAD councillor and Hoshiarpur Market Committee chairman, seconded the proposal.
Of the 50 votes (49 of the councillors and one of the MLA), Shiv Sud got 31 while 18 went to the Congress nominee. An Independent councillor, Monika Katna, abstained from the voting.
For the Senior Deputy Mayor’s post, SAD’s Prem Singh defeated Brahmshankar Jimpa of the Congress by 13 votes (31-18). Shukla Devi Sharma of the SAD was elected Deputy Mayor. She defeated Surinder Chhinda of the Congress, again by 13 votes (31-18).
