New Delhi, March 7
A multi-city terror alert has been issued following inputs that 10 suspected LeT and JeM terrorists had sneaked into the National Capital after entering the country from Pakistan through the western state of Gujarat.
Security was tightened on Monday in multiple cities, including Lucknow, Jaipur, Vijaywada, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad and Panji.
Besides Delhi, where the alert was specifically issued yesterday, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Bangalore have also been alerted through security agencies.
According to intelligence sources, while the terror suspects have entered India through Gujarat, there was no information on their subsequent movement, which is why a multi-city, pan India, alert was issued.
An unprecedented security cover was on Monday thrown over Gujarat on ‘Maha Shivratri’ with NSG teams deployed in the state and the police undertaking massive combing operations amidst robust security at major temples and all vital installations.
Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel today held a high- level security meeting to review the situation. Despite reports that terrorists might strike in Delhi or other places, Gujarat Police has decided to not to let its guard down.
Gujarat DGP PC Thakur has ordered massive security and search operations to identify any threats.
Of the four teams of National Security Guard (NSG) that dispatched by the Centre on Saturday night, one has been sent to secure the famous Somnath temple, which attracts a large number of people during Maha Shivratri. The remaining three are stationed here.
The Chief Minister today reviewed the overall security arrangements and preparedness of state police at a meeting with key officials, including the DGP.
In New Delhi, security was stepped up at major temples today in view of the Mahashivratri festival.
A meeting of the top brass of Delhi Police was held, following which all Deputy Commissioners were instructed to heighten vigil in their districts. Police presence and patrolling around temples which were teeming with devotees, popular markets, iconic buildings and other places like metro stations, railway stations and bus terminus, which witness very high footfall, has been stepped up, a senior official said.
Earlier today, Home Minister Rajnath Singh today reviewed the internal security situation in the country in the wake of inputs that 10 suspected LeT and JeM terrorists have entered India from Pakistan through Gujarat.
At a high-level meeting, attended by top security officials including Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi and Director of Intelligence Bureau Dineshwar Sharma, Singh took stock of the situation and the steps taken to prevent any possible terror attacks.
The Home Minister was briefed that four NSG teams have taken position in different locations in Gujarat and would rush to any place if there is any emergency, official sources said.
Singh also reviewed the steps taken to beef up security in strategic locations, religious sites and industrial spots in Gujarat and metro cities apprehending threats, they said.
In view of the January 2 terror attack in Pathankot airbase, security agencies were not taking any chances and all possible steps are being taken to prevent any possible terror attacks, sources said.
