The only achievement : Turning Punjab from the food bowl to Drug bowl of the Nation
Chandigarh, July 13: The Punjab Pradesh Congress President, Mr Partap Singh Bajwa, today challenged Mr Parkash Singh Badal to count even his single achievement during his five terms as the Chief Minister during which the state had only gone down while his family business had proliferated. The State which was once known for green revolution is now more famous for Drug trafficking which is nourishing with Political Police patronage.
In a statement, Mr Bajwa expressed surprise at the claim of Mr Badal that he was the best guarantor of amity and peace in the state which was contrary to the facts on record as his role and that of the Akali Dal had only been only to vitiate the atmosphere in the state. “Mr Badal should go through the document he signed demanding Khalistan while the resolution of his party was on the record for justifying use of bullet. You can’t befool all the people for all the times”, he added.
He recalled that the two parties that had been raising passions in the state had been the Akali Dal and the Jana Sangh, the earlier avatar of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He said it was perhaps for these reasons that he was not interested in bringing his political career on the record by way of biography.
He lambasted Mr Badal for being vague on the questions about his proliferating family business by misuse of official power and said it was not for the people to judge him on this score. He said in case he and his son and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal had not managed even the investing officer probing corruption case against them, what to talk of the witnesses, the judicial verdict might have been different.
Commenting upon Mr Badal claim of maintaining peace and harmony, Mr Bajwa reminded him that it was the Congress government headed by Mr Beant Singh that restored peace and amity in troubled Punjab and he should think twice before staking such claims. He and his party were so scared that they succumbed to the threat from terrorists and boycotted the 1992 Assembly elections.
Referring to the Akali Dal’s relationship with the Bharatiya Janata Party, the PPCC chief said the rift between the two was too open with the BJP ministers giving vent to their disgust at public platforms. What Mr Badal had said was just a face saver amidst mounting tension between the two alliance partners.
He said the Narendra Modi government in which the Akali Dal was a partner had ditched Punjab on every issue and as such, it was for the BJP chief Mr Amit Shah to clarify whether his party would continue to have alliance with the Akali Dal in 2017 elections or not.
