New Delhi, June 12 : The Shiromani Akali Dal and Bhartiya Janta Party combine MLA Mr. Manjinder Singh Sirsa today ‘thanked’ AAP convener and Delhi Chief Minister Mr. Arvind Kejriwal for waking up from deep slumber on the issue of reservation for Delhi domicile students in Delhi University colleges and urged him to immediately take up the matter with the Delhi University as colleges running in Delhi are funded by the Delhi government.

In a statement released here today, Mr. Sirsa said that it was good news for the Delhi students that Mr. Kejriwal has taken up the issue raised by him with the Delhi University and sought reservation for Delhi domicile students. He said that 28 colleges in Delhi which are affiliated with the Delhi University can implement reservation for the Delhi domicile students in the first instance.

He also reminded the Chief Minister that there is an instance where Delhi University is giving reservation for 75% state quota is for admission to post-graduate medical courses for the students hailing from Delhi who have completed their studies in Delhi. In simple words, Delhi University is providing institutional preference for admission, which is the known fact.

He further said that legally, it is the settled position in law that reservation whether based on domicile or institution in the matter of admission in courses is not unconstitutional. There are various instances wherein other states of India such as Assam, Karnataka, Goa, Tamil Nadu etc. have reservation based on domicile in their universities, moreover, Hon’ble Supreme Court has also held that reservation by way of institutional preference is valid and declare it to be constitutional by directing other states to follow.

Mr. Sirsa said that reservation for the Delhi domicile students in the under graduate courses is need of the hour as the Delhi students have to move to other states due to non existence of such provision by the Delhi University. He said that Mr. Kejriwal can take up the issue with concerned authorities and thereby support the initiated taken by him as this will be a good gesture for the students of Delhi.
