Amritsar, A few Sikh bodies backed former Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti, who has been supporting the dismissed Panj Pyaras, at a meeting held at Akal Takht today.
Vedanti supported the dismissed Panj Pyaras’ move of boycotting the five Takht heads and the SGPC. He said the basic Sikh principles of Miri Piri should be adopted.
Several Sikh radical organisations, including Dal Khalsa, Panch Pardhani, Panthic Talmel Sangathan, SAD (Delhi) and former Jathedars of Takht Damdama Sahib Balwant Nandgarh and Giani Kewal Singh, who had earlier supported the dismissed Panj Pyaras, didn’t attend the meeting.
The SGPC had deputed extra task force in and around Akal Takht vicinity as a precautionary measure.
Vedanti said, “We held this programme to pray for the Sikh religion that is facing crisis due to the controversial decisions of the five Takht heads.”
Meanwhile, the dismissed Panj Pyaras yesterday met former Jathedars of Takht Damdama Sahib Giani Balwant Nandgarh and Giani Kewal Singh, along with the SGPC executive member Mangal Singh, who extended support to them.
The four dismissed Panj Pyaras, Satnam Khanda, Satnam Singh, Mangal Singh and Tarlok Singh, were dismissed by the SGPC on January 1. Major Singh retired on December 31.
Following this, Panj Pyaras passed a ‘gurmata’, urging the Sikh masses to boycott the Takht heads, the SGPC and its Chief Secretary.
Khanda said they intended to continue their religious service of ‘Amrit Sanchar’ (baptising Sikhs) independently under the aegis of Akal Takht. The next meeting would be held at Ludhiana on January 15.
