Opposition parties, including the AGP, CPM and NCP, today demanded a special relief package from the Centre for the people affected in the serial attacks by NDFB(S) militants and retaliatory violence in Assam.At a meeting organised by the Asom Gana Parishad, the group criticised both Central and state governments for failing to provide security to common people.Alleging that many persons in a number of relief camps have not received any relief materials like foods, medicines and blankets, a joint statement by the AGP, CPM, CPI, NCP, CPI (ML) and United Peoples Front demanded the Centre for “a special package for relief and rehabilitation”.While condemning the attacks, the joint statement supported action against the NDFB(S), urging to maintain caution during operations so that no innocent people was harassed.Besides, the united opposition demanded seizure of all illegal arms in Bodoland Territorial Area Districts. The meeting decided to visit the relief camps in Kokrajhar on January 2 and hold a protest sit-in in the state capital on January 3.At least 81 persons, including 26 women and 18 infants, have been killed since December 23 evening in serial attacks by NDFB(S) terrorists, retaliatory violence and police firing across Kokrajhar, Sonitpur, Udalguri and Chirang districts.Nearly 1.8 lakh people belonging to both Adivasi and Bodo communities are living at 136 relief camps in four districts.
Sonowal meets Rajnath
Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today met Home Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi and urged him to take urgent steps for proper relief and rehabilitation of over two lakh people affected due to violence perpetrated by NDFB militants in Assam last week.Sonowal also requested Singh to ensure proper security to those who want to return home. — PTIOne NDFB(S) man, 4 others nabbedDhekiajuli (Assam): Security forces on Monday arrested a cadre of NDFB(S) and four linkmen in connection with the violence unleashed by the group in lower Assam which has left 81 people dead. While the cadre and two linkmen were arrested in Kokrajhar district, which bore the brunt of the mayhem on December 23, in the early hours on Monday, two linkmen were nabbed from Sonitpur on Sunday night.
Movement of civilians restricted
Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh on Monday imposed restrictions on civilian movement along the border with Assam following launch of counter-insurgency operations by Army and paramilitary forces against NDFB(S) militants. An official communique said Arunachal Pradesh Home Minister Tanga Byaling has directed the principal home secretary to issue directives to the districts administration to restrict movement of its civilians in the neighbouring state.
