New Delhi, J Jyoti and Anil Kumar clinched bronze medals in contrasting fashions on the second day of the Senior Asian Wrestling Championship to take India’s tally to three medals, all bronze. Jyoti had it very easy in the women’s 75kg category — she won the medal without fighting a single bout in the repechage round as there were very few entries in her weight category.
Kumar, on the other hand, staged a remarkable comeback after being 1-6 down against Uzbekistan’s Muhammadali Shamsiddinov to clinch the medal 7-6 in the 85kg category in the Greco-Roman format. It was a lion-hearted performance from Kumar, who was staring at defeat after the Uzbek literally toyed with his defence. Kumar brought all his experience into play to pick two points with a counterattack to narrow down the lead to 3-6. And then he pinned down his opponent twice to earn four points to edge ahead. He held on to his narrow lead, not giving Shamsiddinov any chance to stage a comeback.
“I just wanted to come out of that position when I was down on the mat. With the help of my coaches, who were guiding me from the sidelines, I managed to turn the tables,” said Kumar, who hails from Sonepat.
“I am really happy and proud to give my country a medal. The crowd really motivated me to turn the tide in my favour. It was really nice to get the home support.”
