CHANDIGARH: Strongly condemning the sinister attack on the newly elected student leaders of the JNU Students Union, the Communist Party of India (CPI) today said it has exposed the fascist character of the saffron forces, particularly the ABVP whose cadres are following in the footsteps of their BJP supremo Amit Shah.
“The BJP and its affiliates like the ABVP believe in muzzling the opponents and are not hesitating from issuing threats of physical violence. The attack on the student leaders of JNUSU, who enjoy widespread support, is a result of a policy of intolerance towards political rivals,” Dr Joginder Dayal, member of the National Council of the CPI, said in a statement issued here.
“The real reason behind such attacks is the frustration among the saffron cadre following the decisive rejection of fascist forces by students and youth communities on college and university campuses. The victory of the Left Unity candidates in the JNU and the election of a young woman leader like Kanupriya in Panjab University, Chandigarh, is a portent of the times to come,” Dr Dayal said.
Dr Dayal said it was surprising that the Punjab Government has so far not initiated the process for carrying out student union elections in the state’s colleges and universities.
The Congress government in Punjab cannot have any excuse for not conducting elections in Punjab since the NSUI, affiliated with the Rahul Gandhi-led party participated in the student elections in Panjab University as well as the JNU.
“The ugly aspects of politics can only be countered by inducting fresh blood into politics. Student union elections are the best way of getting the youth into politics,” Dr Dayal said.
The CPI leader said if the leadership of various political parties is interested in saving politics from various kinds of mafia and moneybags, then it needs to give a platform to the students to participate in policy formulation discussions. “Such a platform is only possible through student elections,” Dr Dayal said.
