The ruling Congress party’s MLAs and supporters of the Ashok Gehlot regime, who were in Udaipur’s luxurious five-star Taj Aravali hotel, will return to Jaipur on Thursday.
“The MLAs will arrive in Jaipur on Thursday afternoon,” Pratap Singh Khachariyawas, cabinet minister in the Rajasthan government, told India Today.
The MLAs had gone to a five-star hotel in Udaipur on June 2. Rajya Sabha elections will be held on June 10.
Inside the luxurious and extremely scenic Taj Aravali hotel in Udaipur, Congress MLAs and those supporting the ruling dispensation have been enjoying a gala time. The Congress leaders have been making merry, bingeing on good food, enjoying, exercising and even watching magic shows.
This comes as thousands of local residents in the state have been dealing with a variety of issues, including unemployment and skyrocketing fuel prices, among others. Thousands of Covid health assistants have also been staging dharnas at Jaipur’s Shaheed Smarak for more than two months, pleading with the government to reinstate their jobs lost during the Covid pandemic.
While people in the state have been left at the mercy of no one, Ashok Gehlot has been working tirelessly to ensure that the party’s central leadership’s wishes are met.
The Congress party claims to have the support of 126 MLAs, including its own. However, it requires 123 MLAs to vote for its three candidates to ensure their victory.
“All three of our candidates will win. The BJP wants to once again try to indulge in horse-trading. It does not have the numbers to ensure the victory of Subhash Chandra,” Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot said.
The Congress has booked 150 rooms at the Taj Aravali hotel for its MLAs, ministers, and senior leaders, including the likes of Ashok Gehlot, Randeep Singh Surjewala, and Mukul Wasnik, amongst others. Each room at this luxurious hotel costs from Rs 25,000 to Rs 78,000 per day.
On the other hand, the BJP has also holed up its party MLAs at the luxurious Devi Ratan resort on the outskirts of Jaipur since June 6. The BJP has booked 60 rooms at this resort. At this place, each room costs Rs 10,000 or more per day.
The Congress and the BJP have been locked in a bitter battle which may see more twists and turns in the run up to the June 10 polls.
