Toronto, Toronto road crews are doing what they can to prepare for what could be the city’s first significant blast of winter this season.
Environment Canada has issued a special weather warning for Toronto, the GTHA and cottage country. About 10 centimetres of snow is expected to fall across most of southern Ontario, with the bulk of the snowfall starting after midnight. However, areas around the Niagara peninsula and Georgian Bay could see about 15 centimetres of snow by the time the storm ends late Thursday morning.
Trucks were out overnight applying liquid salt brine to hills and bridges across Toronto. Crews routinely do this 12 to 24 hours before they expect snow to hit. Officials say snow removal trucks will be on standby tonight and can be deployed on major expressways within five minutes.
Nonetheless, drivers will have to be extra vigilant on the road as strong winds will also be a factor. Blowing snow could dramatically affect visibility on city streets and highways.
The storm started in the U.S. near Cape Cod but is making its way north, past New England and towards Canada where it is expected to slam the Maritimes. In New Brunswick, the Emergency Measures Organization says a messy mix of snow and freezing rain could hammer the province. As much as 40 centimetres of snow is expected to fall as well as up to 100 millimetres of rain. Officials are warning the storm could lead to extended power outages.
Meanwhile, people should brace themselves for cooler than normal temperatures today. Though sunny breaks are expected Wednesday afternoon, the temperature will hover around -1 but with the wind chill, it will feel more like -8. The normal temperature at this time of year is about 2C.
