Chandigarh, March 12 : Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has demanded compensation for Punjab farmers on the pattern of Arvind Kejriwal led Delhi government due to unusual widespread rains accompanied by strong winds which feared to have caused damage to wheat and several other crops in the state.

According to AAP, MP from Sangrur, Bhagwant Mann wheat crop at several places, including Sangrur, Bathinda, Faridkot, Ferozepur, Ludhiana, Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Nawanshahar, Mohali, Tarn Taran in Punjab and a few other districts has reportedly got flattened because of rain, hailstorms, thunder squalls and high velocity winds during the last 36 hours.

Mann said the untimely rains have also caused damage to the kinnow crop in Abohar and Fazilka belt and also to the sunflower, Moong (pulses) and maize crops due to their early sowing season in some parts of Punjab especially in the Doaba region .

Mann said under such circumstances Parkash Singh Badal led Punjab government must compensate Punjab farmers in a time bound manner on the pattern of Arvind Kejriwal led government in Delhi.

” Kejriwal led AAP government in Delhi paid Rs. 50,000 per hectare to every farmer in Delhi whose crop was destroyed last year due to unseasonal rain and hailstorms. People may not know but there are nearly 360 villages in Delhi “, said Mann.

Mann said Punjab farmers were already suffering. Punjab farmers have still not been able to recover from the huge loss they experienced last year in which their cotton crop was destroyed due to whitefly attack.

Badal government which claims to be sympathetic to the cause of farmers however has still not compensated them adequately.

At the same time farmers in Punjab continue to commit suicide to due to their poor plight in various parts of the state.

Therefore Mann said it was extremely important for the sate government to immediately get the loss assessed by the revenue and agricultural departments so that farmers could be monetarily compensated without delay.
