Hundreds of crashes reported around the GTA as heavy snow continues to fall

Toronto, Heavy snowfall in the GTA has created messy road conditions for many motorists today and police say they are responding to about one collision every three minutes in Toronto.

By noon, the snowfall total at Pearson was up to 10 centimetres but that number appears to be much higher in other parts of the city, including Toronto’s Riverdale neighbourhood, which Environment Canada says has reportedly seen 22 centimetres of snow.

The national weather agency has issued a snowfall warning for the city of Toronto, Brampton, Mississauga, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Newmarket, Georgina, Oakville, Milton, northern York Region, Burlington and Halton
Hills. These areas could see up to 20 centimetres today. Buttonville airport in Markham has already recorded 14 centimetres of snow so far.

CAA South Central Ontario said by 1 p.m. it received about 2,500 calls for service from drivers and they expect that number to more than double by the end of the day.

No major collisions have been reported yet but police are reminding drivers to slow down and leave more time than usual to get to where you need to go.

School buses in York Region have been cancelled for the day and buses to schools in Mississauaga, Brampton and Caledon have also been cancelled. For a full list of school bus cancellations, click here.
