Chandigarh, March 18
Pressure is once again building up on Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh to act against former minister and senior Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia for his alleged role in the drugs case.
A day after Local Bodies Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu claimed that the Special Task Force (STF) had, in its report, prime facie found evidence against Majithia in the drug trade, former PPCC chief and Rajya Sabha MP Partap Bajwa said: “We have enough evidence and the time is ripe to take him into custody.”
“Before every election, we had stated that Sukhbir and Majithia will be punished for ruining Punjab. If we don’t act now, the people of Punjab won’t trust us in the parliamentary elections. Punishing someone for a crime is serving justice not vendetta. We need to stand by our commitment,” Bajwa said.
Already 40 Congress MLAs have written to the CM to act against Majithia and they had been assured, ahead of the Gurdaspur bypoll, that the government would act against the Akalis after collecting concrete evidence. “Now, there is evidence, why wait. If we delay, people might take it as some understanding between the Akalis and the Congress,” said another MLA, who had signed the petition against Majithia.
The leaders demanded that the two-member committee constituted by the CM to examine the report prepared by the STF, headed by IPS officer Harpreet Singh Sidhu, should not be allowed to dilute the evidence found in the report and take the matter to its logical conclusion.
Dera Baba Nanak MLA Sukhjinder Randhawa, who along with Navjot Singh Sidhu and other Congress leaders, had been vocal over acting against Majithia, said: “I am a Congress MLA and I have no hesitation to say that Majithia is guilty. I had brought up the issue initially in 2015. Then AAP built its entire campaign around it. Our government is closely following the developments in the High Court and will reach to the bottom of the matter.”
