Muktsar, March 14
The wheat harvesting season is about to begin but the farmers who burnt the residue of the paddy crop are yet to be penalised in Muktsar district.
As per information gathered from the Pollution Control Board, farmers were penalised only in Muktsar subdivision. No farmer in the other two subdivisions — Malout and Gidderbaha — have been penalised for burning straw of the last crop.
Muktsar Assembly constituency, which falls in Muktsar subdivision, is represented by SAD MLA Kanwarjit Singh ‘Rozy Barkandi’, Gidderbaha Assembly constituency falling under Gidderbaha subdivision is represented by IYC chief Amarinder Singh ‘Raja Warring’ and Malout Assembly constituency falling in Malout subdivision is represented by Deputy Speaker Ajaib Singh Bhatti. Similarly, parts of Lambi Assembly segment, represented by former CM Parkash Singh Badal, fall both in Malout and Gidderbaha subdivisions.
Daljit Singh, SDO, Pollution Control Board, said, “Nearly 350 challans have been issued to farmers for burning paddy stubble in fields this year in Muktsar subdivision. However, we have not challaned any farmer in Malout and Gidderbaha subdivisions for burning paddy stubble this year as the verification report from the tehsils is still awaited. We had timely informed them about the field fires. Now, it is their duty to verify who owned the land where the straw was burnt.”
Notably, the state government had this year used satellite technology to trace field fires.
