Nagpur,
Shreyas Gopal smashed an unbeaten 150 as Karnataka piled on a massive total of 570 runs to take a huge 397-run lead against Mumbai in their Ranji Trophy quarterfinals here today. Facing an uphill task of erasing the massive deficit and setting a fighting target, Mumbai floundered in the second innings as well, finishing the day at 120/3. At the close of play, Suryakumar Yadav (55) and Akash Parkar (3) were holding the fort for Mumbai.
In the morning, Karnataka resumed at 395/6, with skipper Vinay Kumar on 31 and Gopal on 80. Debutant Shivam Malhotra sent back Kumar quickly, but Gopal shared a 73-run partnership with Krishnappa Gowtham (38) for the eighth wicket and a 92-run stand with S Arvind for the last wicket to frustrate Mumbai. The No. 11 Arvind smashed a scintillating 51, clouting nine fours and a six in his 41-ball knock.
In their second innings, Mumbai got off to a rocky start as they lost openers Prithvi Shaw (14) and Jay Bista (20) cheaply for the second time in the match.
Delhi nose head
Vijayawada: Former India spinner Narendra Hirwani’s son Mihir Hirwani picked up a five-wicket haul but Delhi still nosed ahead of Madhya Pradesh after taking a crucial 67-run lead here today. Leg-spinner Hirwani returned figures of 5/89. His effort, though, was not enough for MP to prevent Delhi from taking the lead. In reply to Madhya Pradesh’s 338 all out, Delhi’s first innings ended at 405. At the end of the day, MP were 47/2 in their second innings.
