Chandigarh, The Punjab government today sectioned night shelter in 8 prominent cities for the labourers to protect them from the cruel winter nights.The Government has secntioned Rs. 2.40 crore for construction of shelters.
Disclosing this, a spokesperson of the Labour department said that a plan is afoot in which nightshelters and labour sheds will be constructed in the 8 cities across the state. These sheds/shelters will come up on the sites which would be selected locally by the municipal councilors of the concerned area or the municipal councils.
Further divulging the details, the spokesperson said that these shelters will go a long way in serving the twin purpose. First one of which will be protecting the labourers, assembled there for collecting their enumeration, from the vagaries of nature and secondly the labourers, specially the homeless ones, can also spend the night there. The main characteristic of this scheme is that the facilities to be provided in these shelters can only be availed by the registered construction labourers.
The spokesperson also added that in a meeting of the Punjab Building And Under Construction Welfare Board, chaired by the Labour Minister, Punjab, Bhagat Chunni Lal, it was decided to build the shelters and also for this purpose financial aid was demanded from the welfare board.
According to the further information by the spokesperson, the Minister said that a sum of Rs. 30 lakh each for constructing shelters/sheds in Ferozpur, Guru Harsahai and Mandi Gobindgarh, Rs. 25 lakh for Mahilpur and Rs. 20 lakh each for Hoshiarpur, Dharamkot , Faridkot , Bathinda has been released to the Deputy Commissioners of the concerned districts as a advance so that there are no hindrances in the work of construction these sheds/ shelters.
