Driving Naari Programme launched in Chandigarh
Hoshiarpur/Chandigarh, The Punjab Congress President, Mr Partap Singh Bajwa, today called upon the Parkash Singh Badal government to focus on governance which had become a casualty in the competitive politics between the alliance partners, the Akali Dal and the Bharatiya Janata Party which were trying to appropriate each other’s support base.
In a statement, Mr Bajwa referred to the reports appearing daily in the newspapers about the quarrels between the activists and the MLAs from the two parties in which the issues of governance and development were getting affected.
This was happening all over the state ever since the Akali Dal opted for support to Om Parkash Chautala led Indian National Lok Dal in the recent Haryana Assembly elections in which the BJP hit the unexpected jackpot, much to the discomfiture of the Akali Dal.
He said it was ironic that the Akali Dal was now trying to project itself as the custodian of the interests of the dalits as the Narendra Modi government inducted BJP’s dalit MP from Hoshiarpur Vijay Sampla in his cabinet with an eye on the dalit vote bank in Punjab in an effort to test the Punjab electoral waters at its own.
Mr Bajwa said all these years, it had been the Congress which had been taking special care for the uplift of these sections and came up with schemes targeted at their welfare.
Mr Bajwa counselled Mr Badal to get something tangible done for the state before the BJP walked out of the alliance forcing early elections. He said in case the BJP had the design to go it alone in the Assembly elections in Punjab, then it would not like the share the baggage of anti-incumbency that this government was facing with whose functioning the people were fed up and made up their mind to teach this alliance a lesson.
In this context, Mr Bajwa said Mr Badal should forcefully take up the issue of ever burgeoning state debt. He said in order to put pressure on the Modi government, Mr Badal should have the courage to take the stand that his party was willing to give up its quota of berth in the Union cabinet for debt waiver. For this purpose, Mr Badal should withdraw his daughter-in-law Mrs Harsimrat Kaur Badal from the Modi cabinet who otherwise was holding the most insignificant portfolio.
Look at the irony of the situation when Government has even resorted to divert funds meant for Dalits, old age pension Mr Bajwa said.
