Toronto: An extreme cold weather alert remains in effect for the city ahead of what is expected to be a frigid start to the week.
According to Environment Canada, the temperature in Toronto dipped to -11 C Monday morning but will feel closer to -18 C with the wind chill.
As part of the cold weather alert, the city will be increasing its services for the homeless which include handing out TTC tokens, opening additional beds at shelters and increased overnight street outreach.
The city’s acting medical officer of health urges residents to check on vulnerable family members, friends and neighbours during the weather alert.
Residents are also advised to dress in layers, drink warm fluids and avoid outdoor activities.
The alert will remain in effect until otherwise notified.
Despite the current chill, temperatures are expected to warm up Tuesday.
Environment Canada is predicting a high of 0 C on Tuesday with mainly cloudy skies and an overnight low of – 6 C.
But don’t get too excited – snow is slated to return Thursday with a 60 per cent chance of flurries.
