Chandigarh, The Justice Zora Singh Commission constituted to probe police firing at Behbal Kalan on protesters agitating against sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib at nearby Bargari village in Faridkot district last year in June has indicted the police and recommended compensation to the families of the two victims who died in firing and to those injured.
The commission submitted its report yesterday evening. The seriousness of the government was betrayed by the fact that when Justice Zora Singh (retrd) reached the secretariat to submit the report, there was none to receive it. It was to be submitted to the Chief Secretary.
According to the sources, the commission has stated that excessive use of force was unjustified. The police failed to submit any evidence that provoked firing on peaceful protesters. The commission has recommended action against the policemen involved in firing within six months.
The commission has recommended compensation of Rs 25 lakh to each of the families of the two persons killed with government job. Compensation of Rs 10 lakh each has been recommended to the injured.
Significantly, the commission has blamed the police for non-cooperation during probe saying entire record relating to this incident was not submitted to him.
The 51-page report is based upon the evidence recorded by 206 witnesses.
