TORONTO — The Toronto Stock Exchange edged higher in late-morning trading, boosted by strength in metal and mining stocks.
The S&P/TSX composite index climbed 51.57 points to 13,918.85.
Among the most actively traded was Teck Resources Ltd., which saw its class-B shares climb $1.22 to $14.56.
The Canadian dollar gained 0.29 of a cent at 79.28 cents US.
The move followed a report by Statistics Canada that wholesale sales fell 2.2 per cent to $55.8 billion in February.
Sales fell in five of the seven subsectors.
In New York, markets were mixed as the Dow Jones industrial average gained 10.68 points at 18,064.28, while the S&P 500 slipped 0.48 of a point to 2,100.32.
The Nasdaq composite gained 4.33 points at 4,944.66.
On the commodity markets, the June contract for North American benchmark crude oil was down 12 cents at US$42.35, while the May contract for natural gas was down 0.6 of a cent at US$2.082.
The June contract for an ounce of gold gained 80 cents at US$1,255.10.
