CHANDIGARH, March 28: Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Capt Amarinder Singh today condemned the unconstitutional and undemocratic dismissal of the Congress government in Uttrakhand and imposition of President’s rule there, calling it murder of democracy and a brute attempt at undermining the federal structure of the constitution.
Capt Amarinder also asked the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to clarify his stand on the issue since it (the dismissal of the Uttrakhand government) undermines the basic principle of federalism he (Mr Badal) has always been beating his breast about.
“It is a paradox that Mr Badal’s daughter in law, Harsimrat Kaur Badal was party to the cabinet decision that recommended the unconstitutional dismissal of the Uttrakhand government while he himself has always been crying hoarse about the attempts to undermine federal structure of the constitution”, the former Chief Minister pointed out, while remarking, his party had now become party at those attempts by supporting the dismissal of an elected government.
He said, this was yet another example of Mr Badal’s characteristic double standards that he preaches something and practices something else, like running with the hare and hunting with the hounds.
The PCC president expressed surprise as how the BJP government at the centre led by Narendra Modi, who himself having been a Chief Minister and who has always been arguing for a strong federal structure, could dismiss an elected government without allowing the Chief Minister to go for the floor test in the assembly.
“The confidence or no confidence in a government can only be decided inside the Vidhan Sabha and the BJP led NDA government at the centre did not wait for that to happen”, he pointed out, while warning that the BJP at the centre was setting wrong and dangerous precedents.
