Chandigarh/Barnal, Aam Aadmi Party Leader and Senior Lawyer H.S. Phoolka criticized previous Akali-BJP and Congress Governments for misleading people on the issue of water crisis in Punjab. “The water crisis of Punjab is a creation of the Central government. Earlier it was Indira Gandhi’s Congress government and now the BJP- Akali government in Centre. In 1976, Indira Gandhi Congress government and subsequently in 1982 again Indira Gandhi Congress government created these crisis and deprived people of its due rights over Punjab water.” Said Phoolka.
Phoolka said that the present Central government of BJP-Akali Dal has the same powers and it can restore the rights of Punjab over its water. But Badal Sahib instead of forcing its own government at Centre is diverting the issue.
In 2004, the UPA government sent the case of Punjab water to the Supreme Court through the President by way of Presidential reference. Presently, Supreme Court is hearing that case and all the orders related to SYL are passed related in that case. The Central government has the power to withdraw the case from the Supreme Court through the President of India and resolve the issue itself.
The Central government has the power to restore the rights of the Punjab over its water and give the due share to Punjab. But unfortunately instead of doing that, at the instance of the Modi government, Badals are trying to create conflict between the people of Punjab and the Supreme Court.
Badal should fulfill its duty towards Punjab, force its own Central government to withdraw the case from Supreme Court and the Centre government should revise its 1976 decision and 1982 agreement and protect the rights of Punjab over its water.
